Hidden Gems in Florence
Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Florence.
Secret spots in Florence
Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella
A 13th-century Dominican pharmacy selling perfumes and remedies in frescoed rooms. The interior is jaw-dropping — it's like shopping in a museum. Buy the Acqua di Colonia; it's been the same formula for centuries.
San Miniato al Monte
A Romanesque church on a hill above the city with the best panoramic view of Florence — superior to Piazzale Michelangelo which is right below. The monks sing Gregorian chant at 5:30pm daily.
Corridor Vasariano Route
Walk the route of the Vasari Corridor along the Arno — even though the corridor itself has restricted access, the external path from Palazzo Vecchio through the Uffizi to the Ponte Vecchio reveals hidden views.
Giardino Bardini
A Renaissance garden with fewer visitors than Boboli but equally beautiful views. The wisteria tunnel in spring is legendary and the cafe terrace has a panorama that rivals any in the city.
Santo Spirito Neighbourhood
The Oltrarno neighbourhood around Piazza Santo Spirito is Florence's artisan quarter. Leather workers, bookbinders, and furniture restorers work in open workshops. The piazza's evening aperitivo scene is wonderful.
Brancacci Chapel
The frescoes by Masaccio in this small chapel are considered the birth of Renaissance painting. Far fewer visitors than the Uffizi, and the art is equally revolutionary. Book a timed entry.
Rose Garden (Giardino delle Rose)
A free garden below Piazzale Michelangelo with 350 rose varieties and sculptures by Folon. The views of the Duomo through rose bushes are perfect for photos. Most tourists walk right past it.
Mercato di Sant'Ambrogio
Florence's local market — not the tourist-oriented Mercato Centrale. The produce stalls, the tripe cart outside, and the lunch counter serving €5 pasta plates are authentically Florentine.
