Hidden Gems in Hanoi

Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Hanoi.

Secret spots in Hanoi

01

Train Street

A narrow residential street where trains pass twice daily just inches from homes. The cafes along the track serve Vietnamese coffee while you wait for the train. Visit in the afternoon for the 3:30pm train.

02

Temple of Literature at Dawn

Vietnam's first university (1070) is peaceful at opening time before tour groups arrive. The courtyards, bonsai gardens, and the ancient turtle stele are serene and beautiful in the early light.

03

Long Biên Bridge at Sunset

The old French colonial bridge offers gritty, atmospheric views of the Red River and local life. Walk or motorbike across at sunset — the warm light on the iron structure is incredibly photogenic.

04

Đường Lâm Ancient Village

A 1,000-year-old village 45km from Hanoi with laterite stone houses and a completely rural atmosphere. Hire a motorbike and spend a half-day exploring — the sticky rice and tea are exceptional.

05

B-52 Lake

A small lake in the Ngọc Hà neighbourhood with the wreckage of an American B-52 bomber still in the water. It's a surreal, powerful sight — a chunk of war history in a residential area.

06

West Lake Cycling

Rent a bike and cycle the 17km loop around Hồ Tây (West Lake). You'll pass pagodas, floating restaurants, and lotus ponds. The northern shore is quiet and feels like countryside.

07

Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural

A 4km-long ceramic mosaic running along the Red River dyke — one of the longest in the world. The murals depict Vietnamese history and folklore. Best seen by walking or cycling the path.

08

Ngọc Sơn Temple Interior

Most tourists photograph the red bridge but skip the temple on the island. Inside, the preserved giant turtle is fascinating and the temple offers peaceful views across Hoàn Kiếm Lake.
