Hidden Gems in Prague
Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Prague.
Secret spots in Prague
Vyšehrad Fortress
The lesser-known hilltop fortress south of the centre with Romanesque rotunda, a beautiful cemetery (Dvořák's grave), and panoramic Vltava views. It's free, peaceful, and historically fascinating.
Letná Beer Garden
A hilltop beer garden with the best view of Prague's bridges. The Metronome (replacing a former Stalin statue) is nearby. Locals come for sunset beers — the panorama of the Old Town is magnificent.
Kafka's Grave at New Jewish Cemetery
Franz Kafka is buried in an out-of-the-way cemetery in Žižkov. The simple grave is moving and the surrounding cemetery is beautiful. Far fewer visitors than the Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov.
DOX Centre for Contemporary Art
A former factory in Holešovice turned into Prague's best contemporary art space. The Gulliver airship on the roof is a walk-in sculpture-reading room. The exhibitions are always thought-provoking.
Vítkov National Monument
The largest equestrian statue in the world sits atop a hill in Žižkov with stunning views. The communist-era memorial inside has been repurposed as a museum. The hilltop park is one of Prague's best viewpoints.
Riegrovy Sady Beer Garden
A locals' beer garden in Vinohrady with a big screen for football and views of Prague Castle. The beer is cheap, the crowd is Czech, and the atmosphere on summer evenings is perfect.
Naplavka Farmers Market
A Saturday riverside market along the Vltava embankment. Czech cheeses, craft beer, trdelník, and local produce from Bohemian farms. The river views and relaxed atmosphere make it worth the early start.
Strahov Monastery Library
Two baroque library halls with breathtaking frescoed ceilings and ancient globes. You can only view from the doorway, but the sight of thousands of books under painted heavens is extraordinary.
