Best Restaurants in Tokyo

A curated guide to the best restaurants in Tokyo — from iconic local institutions to under-the-radar spots worth crossing the city for.

Where to eat in Tokyo

01

Sukiyabashi Jiro (Roppongi)

While the original Ginza location is nearly impossible to book, the Roppongi branch (run by Jiro's son) offers the same extraordinary omakase sushi. Each piece of nigiri is a meditation on perfection.

02

Fuunji

A tiny ramen shop near Shinjuku Station with a legendary tsukemen (dipping ramen). The thick, rich broth is served separately and the noodles are perfectly chewy. Queue is long but moves fast.

03

Afuri

A modern ramen chain that elevated yuzu shio (citrus salt) ramen to an art form. The light, fragrant broth with a squeeze of yuzu is refreshing and addictive. The Nakameguro original is the best.

04

Narisawa

One of Tokyo's most ambitious restaurants, using foraged and sustainability-focused ingredients. The 'soil' course and the charcoal-grilled duck are memorable. The multicourse menu tells the story of Japanese seasons.

05

Tsukiji Outer Market

While the inner market moved to Toyosu, the outer market's 400+ food stalls remain. The tamagoyaki (egg omelette), uni (sea urchin), and fresh sashimi are extraordinary. Go before 10am.

06

Tonkatsu Maisen

The best tonkatsu in Tokyo, in a converted bathhouse in Aoyama. The kurobuta (Berkshire pork) cutlet is thick, juicy, and shatteringly crispy. The cabbage and miso soup are unlimited and excellent.

07

Den

Chef Zaiyu Hasegawa's playful two-Michelin-star restaurant. The Dentucky Fried Chicken course is tongue-in-cheek genius and the seasonal kaiseki courses are stunning. Book months ahead.

08

Kanda

A three-Michelin-star kaiseki restaurant in Minato that's intimate and serene. Chef Kanda's cooking is deceptively simple — each dish reveals layers of flavour. The seasonal progression through courses is masterful.
