Hidden Gems in Amsterdam
Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Amsterdam.
Secret spots in Amsterdam
Begijnhof
A hidden medieval courtyard in the heart of the city that most tourists walk right past. Enter through an unmarked door on Spui — inside is a serene garden with the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam.
Electric Ladyland
The world's first museum of fluorescent art, run by an eccentric American in a basement in the Jordaan. It's tiny, weird, and completely unforgettable. Ring the doorbell to enter.
Brouwerij 't IJ
A craft brewery in a windmill in East Amsterdam. The locals drink here on sunny afternoons — try the Zatte (blonde tripel) on the terrace with views of the iconic De Gooyer windmill.
Vondelpark Open Air Theatre
Free performances throughout summer — from jazz to comedy to dance. Locals bring picnics and blankets. It's the best free entertainment in the city and barely any tourists know about it.
De Hallen
A converted tram depot in Oud-West with independent shops, a cinema, and a library. It's where creative Amsterdammers hang out — far more interesting than the tourist shopping streets.
Hortus Botanicus
One of the world's oldest botanical gardens, dating to 1638. The butterfly greenhouse and ancient cycad are highlights. It's rarely crowded and makes for a peaceful afternoon escape.
