Free Things to Do in Istanbul

You don't need to spend a cent to have an incredible time in Istanbul. Here are the best free experiences the city has to offer.

Free activities in Istanbul

Visit the Blue Mosque, Istanbul
01

Visit the Blue Mosque

Entry is free (it's a working mosque). The 20,000 blue İznik tiles that give it its name are breathtaking. Visit outside prayer times, dress modestly, and enter through the tourist entrance.

Istanbul
02

Walk Across the Galata Bridge

The iconic bridge connecting old and new Istanbul is free to cross. Fishermen line the railings, ferries pass below, and the mosque-studded skyline is magnificent. Walk it at sunset for the best light.

Istanbul
03

Explore the Grand Bazaar

One of the world's oldest covered markets is free to wander. 4,000+ shops selling everything from carpets to spices. The architecture — painted ceilings, ancient archways — is as impressive as the goods.

Süleymaniye Mosque, Istanbul
04

Süleymaniye Mosque

Sinan's masterpiece is free to enter and less crowded than the Blue Mosque. The interior is luminous — the stained glass windows flood the space with coloured light. The courtyard views are spectacular.

Istanbul
05

Walk from Karaköy to Ortaköy

A waterfront walk along the Bosphorus passing Dolmabahçe Palace, the naval museum, and several parks. The views across to Asia and the changing architecture of Istanbul's European shore are fascinating.

Istanbul
06

Spice Bazaar Exterior and Surroundings

The area around the Egyptian Bazaar has free street markets selling cheeses, olives, and dried fruits. Sample freely — vendors are generous — and the Rüstem Pasha Mosque upstairs is a free hidden gem.

Istanbul
07

Taksim Square to Galata Tower Walk

Walk the length of İstiklal Avenue for free — 1.4km of historic architecture, street performers, and side-street discoveries. The view of the Galata Tower emerging as you descend is iconic.

Istanbul
08

Sunset from Üsküdar Waterfront

Cross to the Asian side by ferry and watch the sun set behind the old city skyline from the Üsküdar waterfront. The silhouette of mosques against orange sky is Istanbul's most photographed moment.
