Hidden Gems in Reykjavik
Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Reykjavik.
Secret spots in Reykjavik
Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach
A man-made beach with geothermally heated seawater on Reykjavik's coast. Locals swim here year-round — the contrast of warm water, cold air, and mountain views is uniquely Icelandic.
Reykjavik Street Art
The city centre is covered in murals — many commissioned for the Iceland Airwaves festival. Walk Laugavegur and the surrounding streets for constantly evolving works. The giant scale is impressive.
Perlan Museum
A geodesic dome on a hilltop with a real indoor ice cave, Northern Lights planetarium, and panoramic viewing deck. The exhibits on Icelandic nature are interactive and excellent. Often overlooked.
Grotta Lighthouse
A lighthouse at the western tip of the peninsula accessible at low tide. The sunset views (when there is a sunset) are spectacular, and in winter, it's a prime Northern Lights viewing spot.
Seltjarnarnes Walk
A coastal walk along the peninsula west of the city with bird cliffs, tide pools, and views of Mount Esja. Locals jog here — the fresh North Atlantic air is invigorating.
Whales of Iceland Museum
Life-sized whale models hanging in a darkened warehouse — walking under a blue whale is humbling. The audio guide is excellent and the kids' area is engaging. Better than most whale-watching trips.
