Free Things to Do in Bali

You don't need to spend a cent to have an incredible time in Bali. Here are the best free experiences the city has to offer.

Free activities in Bali

01

Watch Sunrise at Campuhan Ridge Walk

A paved path along a narrow ridge between two valleys in Ubud. At sunrise, the golden light hitting the palm trees is extraordinary. It's short (2km) but one of Bali's most beautiful free walks.

02

Explore Ubud's Rice Terraces

Skip the paid Tegallalang terraces and walk the free Campuhan-to-Bangkiang Sidem trail instead. You'll pass through working rice paddies, small villages, and see farmers tending their crops.

03

Visit Tirta Empul Temple

The entry fee is nominal (under $1) for this sacred water temple where Balinese Hindus come for purification rituals. Watching the devotion of worshippers in the spring pools is deeply moving.

04

Sunset at Tanah Lot

One of Bali's most iconic temples perched on a rock in the sea. The area around the temple is free to explore at sunset — the silhouette against an orange sky is unforgettable.

05

Swim at Suluban Beach

Below Uluwatu, this dramatic beach is reached through a cave and rock crevice. The swimming is great at low tide and there's no charge to access it. Watching pro surfers from the cliff is mesmerizing.

06

Morning Ceremony at Any Village Temple

Wander any Balinese village in the morning and you'll encounter offerings, incense, and prayer. The spiritual energy is palpable. Dress respectfully (sarong over shorts) and you're welcome to observe.

07

Echo Beach Sunset

Canggu's Echo Beach is free to access and the sunsets are magnificent. Grab a cheap coconut from a beach vendor, sit on the sand, and watch surfers catch their last waves of the day.

08

Explore Sanur Boardwalk

A paved beachside path stretching several kilometres along Sanur's coast. Cycle or walk it for free — you'll pass fishing boats, temples, and traditional art galleries along the way.
