Grand Palace Exterior Walk
While the interior requires a ticket, walking around the massive Grand Palace walls and watching the elaborate guard ceremonies is free. The riverside approach from Tha Chang pier is stunning.
Walk Chinatown's Alleys
Yaowarat's side streets hide shrines, herbal medicine shops, and gold traders. Wander Soi Nana and Soi Wanit — every alley reveals something unexpected. The pre-dawn flower market prep is incredible.
Lumpini Park
Bangkok's Central Park is free and fascinating. Early morning tai chi groups, massive monitor lizards roaming free, and paddle boats on the lake. It's the city's best escape from the chaos.
Visit Wat Pho Grounds
The exterior courtyards and smaller temple buildings at Wat Pho are free to explore. The temple complex is massive and the quieter sections away from the Reclining Buddha are genuinely peaceful.
Chao Phraya Public Ferry
For the price of a bus ticket (15 baht), ride the orange-flag public ferry up the Chao Phraya past temples, colonial buildings, and local life. It's essentially a free river cruise.
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)
Free contemporary art exhibitions in a striking spiral building at the Siam intersection. The rotating shows are hit-or-miss but the building itself and the independent shops inside are always worth exploring.
Walk the Bangkokian Museum
A free museum in three traditional teak houses showing Bangkok life in the 1930s-50s. It's tiny, charming, and gives context to how drastically the city has changed.
