Hidden Gems in Sydney
Skip the tourist traps. These are the secret spots, hidden corners, and local favourites that most visitors never find in Sydney.
Secret spots in Sydney
Wendy's Secret Garden
A hidden garden created by Wendy Whiteley below the former home of artist Brett Whiteley in Lavender Bay. The lush plantings and harbour views are magical — and most Sydneysiders don't know it exists.
Cockatoo Island
A former convict prison and shipyard in the harbour, now a camping and art destination. Sleep in a waterfront tent with Opera House views. The industrial ruins and convict history tours are fascinating.
Barangaroo Reserve
A headland park of native plants built on a former container terminal. The sandstone cliffs are modelled on the pre-colonial shoreline. Walk to the tip for harbour views without the Circular Quay crowds.
Paddington Reservoir Gardens
A sunken garden built inside a 19th-century water reservoir. The exposed brick arches, reflecting pool, and climbing plants create an atmospheric urban oasis. Free and rarely crowded.
Bronte to Coogee Walk
While everyone does Bondi to Bronte, continuing from Bronte to Coogee is quieter and equally beautiful. The cemetery on the clifftop with ocean views is one of the most scenic in the world.
White Rabbit Gallery
A free contemporary Chinese art museum in Chippendale with a massive private collection. The four floors of cutting-edge art are always surprising. The tea bar on the top floor is lovely.
